One Table: A Serbian Celebration

{The Puaca Family}

Petar’s parents planned a small and intimate dinner for his side of the family in celebration of our wedding this past January. Since they weren’t able to attend on such short notice, we took the opportunity to celebrate with everyone at an authentic Serbian restaurant in New Belgrade, K2.I really had no idea what to expect, but I went in with an open mind and let the evening unfold.

Twenty-five guests joined us and everyone came bearing flowers, gifts, and bottles of wine and traditional Plum Brandy. Family members from Switzerland flew in for the occasion; Petar’s 92 year old grandmother was the special guest of the evening. It was an overwhelming feeling, in the most beautiful of ways, that I too, was now part of this family.

An orchestra of three played classical Serbian music and even threw in a few Greek songs on my behalf. They were the same three that played at the wedding of Petar’s parents nearly thirty years ago. The festivities lasted all night; bottles emptied then refilled, smoke swirled up to the ceiling and food continuously passed around with no end. It was a true Serbian celebration in its entirety.

As I looked around, three tables joined as one; the room was filled with laughter, singing and chatter. The room was filled with happiness. I fall deeper and deeper in love with Petar everyday (yes, really) and it was such a great feeling to share that with all those important to my husband. Coincidentally, our celebration was on Thanksgiving and even though we didn’t celebrate with the traditional eats of the holiday, we nevertheless found ourselves united around one table, thankful for all the amazing moments life has to offer.
