When looking for textiles, there is so much to choose from. For myself, I tend to pull more for neutrals on bigger pieces, while finding ways to incorporate a pop of color and a global touch to smaller ones. John Robshaw is one of my favorite textile designers for that very reason. Beautiful, hand-blocked fabrics add color and ethnic designs to a pillow, ottoman or even a tablescape. Robshaw has traveled the world, especially Asia, to find inspiration for his own designs. He takes the traditional designs and techniques and blends them with his own to create a fresh take. Obviously, the results are amazing. When reading about Robshaw, his perspective and way of achieving his designs, take on a different light in this quote:
“By producing my textiles abroad, I get to become a minor character in the lives of the people I work with, and I can take inspiration from what I see and do there. I go to their weddings, celebrate their festivals, I get sick with them, I develop relationships with the people who are teaching me. When you look at my textiles, its like you’ve been on the world tour along with me.”
The merging of new and old, traditional and modern come together so beautifully. While Robshaw is know for his textiles, there are accessories and decor, like the hand-carved headboard, that can add a global element to a space. Here are some of my favorites!
