The Urban Garden

I stumbled on this post from Houzz  (see below), this morning and wish I would have read it at the beginning of summer. Urban gardens are gaining momentum, and more and more people are seeking a way to incorporate nature into their urban lifestyle: community gardens, windowsill boxes, herb gardens, and so on.

I don’t consider my thumb green by any means; I do however still take my chances with smaller plants. They can be easily replaced. When I used to live on the 41st floor, I would always be on the look out for faux plants. The good ones- the ones where people ask, “are those real?” I felt like I was creating a small secret oasis up in the clouds.

From the 41st floor, down to the ground floor, we are now fortunate enough to have a beautiful outdoor space in the heart of the city- rarely heard of. Again, one of the reasons I love our apartment. There’s something about waking up in the morning and stepping out to see what the weather’s like and checking out the flowers. At this point in my life, the city still trumps suburbia. There’s something about the hustle and bustle that I feed off of, but there’s nothing like creating a space where you can have best of both worlds. When you’re done with the 9-to-5 rat race, you can come home and slow down.

This article on Houzz by Afrochic compiles the top 20 tools to help anyone, and I mean anyone, start their own urban garden. Imagine it now: fresh rasberry picking on your very own balcony! I see preserves and jams as holiday gifts and a fall rich with berry pies. Shall I go on?
