Holiday

As you all know we are leaving for Serbia tomorrow, and the Holidays are coming early to the Puaca house. Since we won’t see Petar’s family until next year, we’ll be bearing gifts.

When it comes to Holiday gifting, I put A LOT of thought into who shall receive what gift and whether they’ve been naughty…or nice. While I thoroughly enjoy the process of selecting gifts, my strategy gets a bit rocky when I’ve never met the people I’m buying for. Unless you’re giving generic gifts, knowing the individual personally plays a crucial role in gift giving.

So, I’ve come up with a bit of a cheat sheet to help you (and myself) with buying Holiday gifts for those you have yet to meet. Think, boyfriend’s parents; spending the Holidays with your roommate… and her family; or even third or fourth cousins you’ll be meeting for the first time in a small village in Italy. Hey, it happens and you better be prepared!

1. Do some digging

Find out as much as you can about them: their age, occupation and any hobbies they might enjoy. Keep your eyes and ears open and you’ll be able to put two and two together.

2. You can’t go wrong

If you’re seriously stuck for some inspiration, buy something the whole family can use. This tends to fall towards entertaining or home accessories. Think, cashmere throw, wine decanter or a cheese of the month subscription.

3. Handmade gifts

Are the best! Have an old photo of your husband when he was a kid? If you’re lucky, an entire family photo. Enlarge it and get it framed; black and white photos make the most elegant of memories. If you have an old family tradition, bring it to the table. They will appreciate your authenticity and it makes for a perfect bonding moment.

2. Stick to a budget

This is no different than buying gifts for anyone else. You don’t want to splurge because frankly, you don’t know if they will like their gift. However, the opposite is true as well. Don’t be a cheap-o. Find a happy balance and work within your means.

5. A touch of Love

However small or big your gifts, luxurious or simple, make sure to wrap it with love. Show that you made the effort. While it’s the thought that counts, the extra step can speak volumes.

Gifting for a new face this year? Would love to hear what you’ll be giving.
