This week, instead of sharing a recipe, I wanted to shift gears and talk about a few superfoods that I always have stocked and how I incorporate them into my every day. All of these foods have amazing health benefits and are a sure way to get in those much-needed nutrients. My mornings generally start with drinking warm water mixed with apple cider vinegar and taking a tablespoon of coconut oil with chia seeds. I’ll break this down in more detail below, but this gives me serious energy first thing in the morning! Then I always make sure to have a big and balanced breakfast to fuel me for the day.

Scroll down to see some of my favorite superfoods and how I use them…

Cacao Nibs: Are made from cacao beans that have been roasted and broken into smaller pieces. They are a bit crunchy and have a chocolate-y taste to them without the sweet flavor. Considered to be one of the best sources of magnesium, they also happen to be mood-boosters, are rich in iron, fiber and antioxidants. These are excellent in smoothies and are perfect for a dessert.

Goji Berries: Have been used in traditional Chinese medicine for years and are loaded with antioxidants. They also happen to have a ton of beta-carotene which will give you glowing skin! These little guys are immune boosters and are loaded with vitamin-C, which is great for fighting off colds. I happen to really like their taste and they are great in yogurt, in smoothies or even as a snack on their own.

Chia Seeds: There’s no secret that chia seeds are ridiculously healthy! Loaded with antioxidants, fiber, protein and omega 3’s with hardly any calories; it’s hard to overlook their benefits. I add these to my morning smoothie or yogurt bowl, dip my tablespoon of coconut oil in them for a quick burst of energy and add them to sauces and even salads.

Hemp Seeds: I first bought these because they are so high in protein and ended up loving the nutty flavor. Hemp seeds have all of the amino acids that aren’t generally associated with plant-based sources and are especially great for vegetarian-based diets. I’m talking 3 tablespoons gives you 10 grams of protein! I add these to my pesto, salads, smoothies, pretty much anything and everything!

Apple Cider Vinegar: Once you get past the smell and taste, it’s well worth it. Apple cider vinegar is known to detox your body and re-balance your ph levels. It’s great for weight loss and kick starting a sluggish metabolism, stimulates circulation and can even help aid with allergies by cleaning out the lymphatic system. I take two teaspoons of apple cider vinegar, add a bit of honey and dilute it in warm water in the morning to kick start my body.

Honey: Liquid gold, I tell you! Honey has anti-inflammatory effects and is great for treating allergies. It’s also loaded with antioxidants and gives you a quick burst of energy. It acts as an anti-cough suppressant and boosts immunity. Not to mention, I use it half the time in homemade facials and it does wonders for my skin! I happen to love Greek honey and it’s rich flavor, but there are so many great varieties I would love to try out!
