Let’s Talk: Humidifiers VS. Air Purifiers

Spring is right around the corner, the time where you can open up your windows and let some fresh air in. Breathe easier and cleaner. But what do we do in the mean time, during the cold (and long) winter months? Let’s talk… Humidifiers vs. Air Purifiers. Gahhh! This has been driving me crazy! Do I get one? Do I need one in the first place? Which one do I need? These questions have been swirling in my mind and it’s about time I get to the bottom of this.

Chicago is anything but short of humidity come summer months, but in winter it’s nowhere to be found. We find ourselves trying to stay warm by cranking up the heat and battling through cold after cold.

I finally sat down and did some research! It appears that a normal humidity level during the winter months is from 35% – 45%. Now how do you measure your humidity levels, you ask? Apparently there’s this device, the hygrometer, that measures the levels for you. While there are tons out there, all sizes and prices ($123!) I personally liked this small tiny one in a “brass” finish and it’s only $19.00 from Amazon. You might as well keep it stylish.

It is recommended to have one per room but if you can only afford one, then go for the bedroom, where most of your time is spent.

So here’s the DL on humidifiers: their basic purpose, as you probably already know, is to increase humidity levels. By doing this, it can not only decrease dry skin and respiratory problems, but also help your wood furniture. I love multi-purpose!

There are four types of humidifiers:

  • Ultrasonic: These produce a cool mist and are quiet.
  • Impeller: These also are cool mist producing but are much louder.
  • Evaporative: These are cold humidifiers but use a fan to evaporate (hence the name) the water into air.
  • Steam Vaporizers: Create a warm mist by heating the water first

Modern colored humidifiers to be both aesthetically pleasing and practical.

Now for the air purifiers; they purify the air. Ta-da! They remove particles and other pollutants and are beneficial to allergy sufferers and those with asthma. Air purifiers can also assist with eliminating odors.

Now that we’ve got that taken care of, you’re probably thinking how big and ugly are these puppies? Not as bad as you think. Their design has become much sleeker and even fun in some cases. Take a look….

While the information is all great, how do you know which one you need? I’m still trying to figure that out. I think a humidifier is good to have in any circumstance and to be used on a need-to basis (aka Chicago winters). Air Purifiers, I would assume, would be used on a more regular basis and are especially great with pet owners or, as mentioned before, asthma or allergy sufferers. Got it? Phew…now that’s some information.  Gilt is having a sale going on right now with some great deals on all of the options above. I’m thinking perfect house-warming gift… to ourselves!

Do you own a humidifier or air purifier? Or possibly both? What are your thoughts on using these? Would you recommend one over the other?

I would recommend the hepa filter negative ion air cleaners. If you buy the correct size for the room or house you are intending on using it in your home or space will be odor neutral. No need for air fresheners, carpet fresheners, etc, because it removes all smells. Additionally if you just enjoy a nice fragrance I would suggest one of the compact air vaporizer/cleaners such as you mentioned they work really well. I just purchased one from eckogecko products for approximately 60.00 that does a wonderful job of giving the air that super clean smell. Love it.
