As soon as this skirt became available in my size, I snatched it right up. The cut, the pleats and the color were, in my opinion, perfection. It instantly reminded me of my grandmother. She had a skirt almost identical to this one that she wore with a striped navy blue and khaki sweater. I loved that outfit on her; I thought it was fashionable when I was a little girl and here I am trying to replicate that style, twenty years later. It’s funny where we get out inspiration from – magazines, trendsetters, friends, grandmothers.

I was recently shopping at one of my favorite boutiques, and the sales assistants, who are always so helpful, told me that I’m too young to be wearing an outfit like that and that it made me look old. I wasn’t offended but it got me thinking. Maybe she was right. But then again, why is that bad? Does classic or sophisticated mean old and outdated? I don’t think so. Wearing what you love and feeling good in your clothes is more important, I think. Some days call for mini skirts and over-the-knee boots and other days for over-sized sweaters and wide-leg pants. I dress based on how I feel. Yes, I’m an emotional dresser. It’s better than being an emotional eater, I suppose. Even though that tends to happen on occasion, as well. Basically, what I’m trying to say is we shouldn’t feel so boxed up by all these fashion rules. Fashion should be an expression of us; our personality, our mood, our own style. And while it can be influenced and inspired by fashionable trends and what might be hitting the runways, it doesn’t necessarily have to be constrained by them. Not to mention, when you’re trying so hard to stay trendy, it shows…

So, today, I felt like wearing a skirt that reminded me of a woman far too important to be molded by “fashion rules” and a vintage scarf with the perfect red and pink color combo. A pair of shoes that deserve their own right of passage, a purse so beautifully crafted in Italy and a vintage gold bracelet from a new friend and her amazing online shop. Wear what you love. Plain and simple.
