Entrance Rug | A Guide to Rug Shopping

I get a lot of questions about the rug in our entryway. This was one of the very first purchases for our new home and still one of my favorite pieces to date. I initially knew I wanted something global and with a pop of color, so I headed straight to Esalerugs.com to find the perfect piece!

If you’ve been on the site before than you know it’s ridiculously overwhelming! There are sooo many rugs and styles and sizes that it’s hard to keep things in order. Or quite frankly, find ‘the one’ you’re looking for. I’ve broken it down with a few steps and tips to follow that will make sure to find one you absolutely love!

persian and oriental

When you first enter the site you will more than likely to see a SALE going on. They always have amazing sales- generally 50%-75% rugs and it’s definitely worth buying during those times. I suggest simply starting with the “Persian and Oriental” tab. Here you will find generally the best priced pieces and the vibrant and unique designs.

The Filter category is a great way to sift through the pieces, but if only used to your advantage. While size is important, I don’t suggest using it as a point of filter. Most of these rugs are one of a kind and don’t always run true to size. They might fall a few inches shy of one category and be placed in another. The next filter, Color, is a great tool. There are a lot of traditional colors on these rugs; if you are looking for something fresh, I would suggest going for high contrast.

colors

Focus on the colors I’ve outlined: blues, blacks, oranges (which groups colors like salmon), pinks and purples. Reds are also great however the red filter doesn’t give a variety. You will have better luck with the blue filter that shows rugs with blue and red combinations, for example.

patterns

And probably the most important of the filters, Patterns. This is where you can specify the design. While there are many beautiful styles, there are a few I tend to gravitate to for their repeating pattern, symmetry and size.

Under Hamedan: Hamedan, Maleyar, Koliaei, Meshkin and Sirjan (which is the style of my rug).

Under Shiraz: Shiraz, Shiraz-Lori

All of the rugs come with great detail and many photos, so make sure to take the time to read the description. You will know the condition of the piece and be able to see the colors as truly as possible. Now, what kind of person would I be if I didn’t share some of my favorites with you? These are still available and on the site!
